Porsche designed the 956 for the 1982 World Endurance Championship. A new generation of racing cars with pioneering technology, such as a fuel-efficient 2.6 litre turbo engine and a fully synchronised five-speed gearbox. The new Group C regulations prescribed a specific ratio of overall length to wheelbase in order to avoid overly large long-tail constructions. With a wheelbase of 265 cm, the 956 had the longest wheelbase of any Porsche racing car to date. For the first time, Porsche developed a monocoque chassis made from sheet aluminium. The 956 was a vehicle with impressive aerodynamic properties, and one technical detail in particular had a decisive influence on the success of this type: a diffuser on the underbody of the racing car created a vacuum that sucked the 956 to the ground. The downforce achieved in this way enabled very high cornering speeds during the race, giving Porsche a decisive advantage.
