Tartan fabric - “McLaughlan”

High-quality interior textiles with legendary patterns such as pepita, tartan or Pasha have long since achieved classic status. For the first time, these fabrics are now available again in original quality - tested to the highest Porsche standards. This means that historic sports cars and classic cars from the 356 to the 911 (964) can be restored to their original condition.

The introduction of the tartan pattern came from an unexpected source: a pair of tartan trousers worn by Anatole Lapine, then head designer at Porsche. Inspired by his bold style choice, the design team incorporated this classic pattern into the interior programme. A short time later, the tartan celebrated its debut at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1973 in the 911 RSR Turbo with seat centre stripes and side bolsters in "Black Watch" tartan.

A year later, Ferry Porsche gave his sister Louise Piëch the first 911 Turbo ("Turbo No. 1") for her 70th birthday. The interior was almost completely lined with the red and blue "McLaughlan" tartan and, in combination with brick-red leather seats, impressively demonstrated how classic and at the same time bold tartan can be at Porsche.

The three tartans "Black Watch", "McLaughlan" and "Mackenzie" were initially offered exclusively for the 911 Turbo and quickly became a characteristic feature of Porsche's high-performance models. In 1976, they finally found a permanent place in the 911 equipment catalogue.

The top priority in the development of the new "McLaughlan" upholstery fabric was to reproduce the original patterns and colour combinations exactly - with a feel that is true to the original and a long service life. As a result, the high-quality upholstery fabric blends seamlessly into the interior, even if only individual seats or door panels are replaced.

The piece of fabric measures 2 x 1.5 metres and is sufficient to cover either two front seats (only the seat side if the seat backs are made of leather) or the front right and left door panels as well as the rear side panels.
