With the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition for Hodinkee, Porsche Design and Hodinkee are continuing their joint trilogy. The second chapter takes the unique features of historical military chronographs and translates their requirements for legibility, reliability, and robustness into a timepiece that is unparalleled today. The focus of the collaboration is the innovation of a legendary functional principle. The legend of the 911 Turbo. The fascination of Porsche Design.
In 1974, the Porsche 911 Turbo marked the beginning of an era defined by speed, design, and precision. Two years earlier, Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche had set new standards for timepieces with the Chronograph I: “My goal was to design a watch for the 911 driver.”
The Chronograph I’s seamless blend of form and function captivated Turbo enthusiasts, allowing them to express their passion beyond the road. Today, with the limited Chronograph 1 – 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition, we celebrate not only half a century of the 911 Turbo but also 50 years of the “sports car on your wrist.”

Our Heritage. A story of time and zeitgeist.
Born in 1935, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the eldest son of Ferry Porsche, was shaped early on by the pursuit of perfection. His vision of merging minimalist design with technical precision became legendary with the Porsche 911. In 1972, he founded his own design studio, now known as Studio F. A. Porsche, and created the Chronograph I – the first matte black chronograph.
Inspired by the clean lines and functionality of the Porsche 911, F. A. Porsche designed the “sports car for the wrist.” With a black dial, anti-reflective glass, and a red seconds hand echoing the tachometer, the watch embodies the perfect blend of form and function. To this day, it stands as a timeless tribute to the Porsche DNA.

Himself a designer, our founder, Prof. F. A. Porsche, once said: "If we wanted something, we had to make it ourselves." And that is exactly how this very special timepiece was created – in a very special place, by hand and with great attention to detail in Porsche's very own watch manufacturer in Solothurn, Switzerland, which was founded in 2014. The expertise of sports cars and watch experts unite here to create a perfect symbiosis between the two fields, all while combining the highest aesthetic standards with unbeatable performance and precision craftsmanship. The result: watches that propel the thrill of Porsche far beyond the road.

In the late 1970s, Porsche Design's Military Chronograph set new standards with its anti-glare readability and exceptional reliability, becoming a favorite in international aviation.
The new Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition builds on this legacy with groundbreaking innovation: for the first time, it features the proprietary material Titancarbid, making the case even more durable, lighter, and scratch-resistant. The matte black dial stays true to the iconic 1970s design while continuing to deliver optimal functionality – a modern classic for the highest demands.
